New Classification of Periodontal Disease

Presented by Professor Gareth Griffiths

Aims
There have been substantial changes to the classification of periodontitis arising from the World Workshop (2017). The aim of this session is to discuss the 2017 classification system in relation to periodontitis and the recommendation of the British Society of Periodontology for its implementation in general dental practice.

Objectives
At the end of this session participants will:
be familiar with the reasons for changing the classification
understand the changes to classifying periodontitis
understand the BSP’s recommendation for implementation of the system in general dental practice
be able to formulate a diagnosis using the new classification.
understand when it may be appropriate to consider a specialist referral
